Years ago, my best friend gave me his thick worn study bible. A study bible? I didn’t know that there was any such thing. I am an old school Catholic by birth. We had pew books (Latin on the left page-English on the right.) We had catechisms for every grade. But a study bible? The idea was novel. Studying the bible was for nuns and priests. So I devoured this book, hours on end every morning for years. But slowly this practice was forgotten and given up to more important things…chores, work, child rearing. I still have that bible. In a distorted way, I’m returning to the practice of studying- proverbs, verse by verse, and all the verses that it leads me to.
